Product Description
Today I inspected a Caterpillar 336D2L premium used excavator, which was parked in the supplier’s yard along with several other machines. There was no operator present at the time, so I went up and walked around it myself. Everything looks good and clean in the engine compartment–at least for any machine that has worked–hydraulic pumps are dry and no fresh oil around the filter housing–all good because that’s usually a place to be oily on the ground if hydraulic seals are failing out of the housing which is the 1R-0716 in this case. As for the hoses, they all still have tags on them and a few of the fittings on them appear to have been worked on recently or perhaps babied, difficult to tell. All the way down it appears it is dry, did a check on the swing motor again, there is some old dust and dirt in there but no leaks, that was apparent.
Rollers appeared to be free of any spin, didn’t see any cracks on the bottom set (the upper set also appeared free of any cracks). Pins are not sloppy, when hand checked boom and stick have a nice smooth motion, cylinders not noticeably weeping on the rods for a machine like this, which, actually, is a bit of a surprise. I think this entire cab has just been lifted from a straight truck or they are preparing to sell it, it is all covered with a plastic shrink wrap, and the seat has plastic on it and it is cleaned out with a red rag covering it all so I couldn’t really look into the gauges or the hour meter, however the glass is good and door checks look in tact. Sunny and windy out there today but blowing dust all the time I was attempting to take pictures of the underside.There is no major dings or cracks in the casting, paint on the counterweight is solid. Someone apparently cared about the machine, it isn’t just a case of it’s been driven to the ground and left in its parking spot. No smoking gun/Leak issues, no play in the pins, tracks are usable. Maybe would have to see it under load to say for sure, but on the visual aspect this also looks better than most of the 336s I’ve seen through these yards.

The inspection report noted a slight weep on the bucket cylinder which I appreciated Equipment auditors on the machdealers platform telling me upfront. Repacked the cylinder for $150 and it's been making us money ever since.
