SY55U vs 303.5E: Parts Availability and Total Cost of Ownership in Non-Domestic Markets
Hydraulic Component Lead Times – 72 hours or 3 weeks?

The 303.5E has been sourced from a supply chain which was developed over more than 40 years to supply and support remote extraction and construction operations in the very market that we’re talking about. Their parts depot in Johannesburg has a higher SKU depth of 300-series mini excavators as compared to most Chinese OEM parts depots regionally.
There is also a well established eco-system for compatible after-market parts (Baldwin, Fleetguard and Donaldson), which have been proven to meet Cat standards over many years and has been validated by Cat in the mature Cat dealer market and are readily available in the Middle East and South East Asia through independent dealers.

When do these machines really need to be rebuilt?
Main Hydraulic Pump
I’ve seen that intervention take place sooner with the pump in high dust conditions on the SY55U’s. In a rental fleet scenario, if service intervals get bumped around, and they always get bumped around in rental fleet situations where the level of utilization is high, the SY55U’s pump is more unforgiving of any bumped service interval than is the 303.5E. I feel that there isn’t as much margin for wear due to contamination that will result in loss of performance in the Kawasaki-licensed design, because of the tighter tolerance stack.

Travel Motor
For a comparable ‘soft’ ground—specifically for the laterite soils found in certain areas in Sub Saharan Africa and upland areas in south east Asia—the SY55U’s travel motor final drive, in particular the planetary gear assembly, has more wear.
It is more affordable to rebuild the components of the SY55U’s. The labour for that rebuild, is approximately the same as Cat in most non-domestic markets. So the financial crossover point, where the lesser cost of acquisition and the lesser cost of rebuild of the SY55U’s are offset by the higher rebuild frequency, is highly conditioned upon machine utilization rate.
The Technician Availability Paradox
Cat has established dealer training programs for mechanics, who, for decades, have been able to perform technical services in non-domestic markets in the country and are certified.
One thing should be pointed out regarding diagnostic software. Cat’s ET diagnostic tool is easily accessible, widely pirated, in fact—and in a non-domestic market, well documented by the third-party repair house. Sany’s diagnostics package for the SY55U has a much smaller footprint outside China. In most markets outside of the domestic market, firmware updates, parameter resets after replacing components go through official channels. This is an operational friction cost not on the front page.
In multi-year contracts, on remote installations, where machine down time carries a daily cost not necessarily considered by most purchasers when acquiring the machine—the 303.5E’s total ownership cost is less than may be understood by the buyer at the time of purchase. The value gap factor is compounded by the residual value.

How you use that information will depend upon the placement of your project on the risk curve. The SY55U’s lower entry cost benefits a 2 year urban construction earthworks contract on the same premise of easy access to parts supplier and competent Chinese-OEM service network, within an hour’s drive – in Manila. When deploying equipment into a three-year project in Zambia’s Copperbelt, 200kms away from the nearest dealer with often rough and rutted roads, the 303.5E’s higher acquisition price also turns out to be a value for money proposition when it comes to uptime.
